Overview

What lighting installation involves

Good lighting is layered: ambient light to fill a room, task light where you work, and accent light for character. Modern LED fixtures use a fraction of the energy of older lamps, but dimmers, transformers and drivers must be matched carefully to avoid flicker and buzzing.

Safety first

Recessed fixtures in insulated ceilings must be IC-rated. Exterior fixtures need wet-location ratings.

Questions

Lighting Installation questions

Why do my new LED lights flicker on a dimmer?

Many older dimmers are designed for incandescent loads. An LED-compatible dimmer matched to the fixture usually solves it.

How far apart should recessed lights be?

A common starting point is spacing about half the ceiling height apart, adjusted for beam angle and room use.

Can I add lights without new switches?

Often, but smart or multi-way control may require new switch legs or a neutral.
